Caroline Forbes knew better than anyone just how important rules and laws were, especially in the world that she had been forced to live in since the day that Katherine Pierce had taken her human life from her.

As the daughter of Mystic Falls' Sheriff, Caroline had been raised to believe in the structure of the law perhaps more than any of her friends had and, once she had been turned, Caroline understood the need for structure and order all the more. To give in to desires - brutal animal desires - would be to let the world unfold into complete chaos... No one would ever be safe should that happen, and no one would ever be happy.

That wasn't to say that some weren't happiest thriving on that very chaos; it was those beings that ended up in jail - or worse, dead. If there was one thing that the blonde vampire never wanted to be, it was a ruthless monster that needed to be pried from the world and either placed behind thick metal bars or placed six feet below the ground.

Members of her family - her new family, not so much her biological family - had been ruthless quite like that through the years. Klaus and Elijah didn't plead innocence when it came to their historic crimes, much as Rebekah and Kol refrained from. Some - mainly Elijah - tried to be better; tried to tap into that spark of humanity that lingered beneath the beast that had haunted the world for centuries and succeeded (most days) in reclaiming that humanity for themselves. Others - like Klaus and Kol - struggled more in doing so, but with beings like Avelina and Davina introduced to their ever-growing family, it was showing that they were finding themselves with something worth fighting for.

It made following rules hard for the Mikaelson family, this was true. Caroline understood that there was history between the Mikaelson family and Marcel Gerard; she didn't know all of the details, but she knew enough to understand why they weren't willing to lower themselves to bow down to Marcel's feet. They were exempt from the laws his power over New Orleans had allowed him to create only because their family's power was far greater than his. He knew this.

Still, as Caroline stood surrounded by trees that tossed gently in the cold breeze that was masked in the darkness that came a few hours after sunset, she couldn't help but to wonder just how many times Marcel planned to turn a blind eye to their family's doings. It would be a matter of time before the people of New Orleans demand the Mikaelson family be held to the same laws as the rest of the supernatural population which would spark a war between Marcel and his recruits and the Mikaelson family and theirs.

The dead wolf that lay before her might not be the last straw, but she knew the packs would demand someone's punishment in exchange for this life that had been taken. She could smell the being's blood all over her hands, her jeans, her ballet flats... There wasn't a single life that Caroline had ever wanted to take - if anything, she was the most controlled being belonging to the Mikaelson family - but what choice had she? This was worst-case-scenario self defence! She hadn't wandered out that evening looking for a fight; Caroline never picked fights, especially now that her emotions were always so magnified... All part of being a vampire.

The blonde tried to be understanding when it came to the situation; yes, there were territory lines that were not to be crossed by vampires. The Bayou housed a sanctuary of werewolves which was comprised of the larger portion of the Bayou, gifted to the wolves to appease them and their need for protection and security from Marcel's men but not everything in the Bayou belonged to the wolves. The lakes, the running paths, the woods, the mountains... Those were all fair game, even if some of the younger wolves found themselves a bit confused in regards tot hat stipulation.

Wolves were funny little creatures, though. Despite how many times Caroline had found herself trying to reason with the phased wolf, he - or she - had no desire to listen. Maybe they were longing for a good fight... Maybe they wanted a story about a vampire they had taken down so close to their lands. Either way, it had resulted in a game of cat and mouse and Caroline hated being the mouse. She hadn't much of a choice, though. One bite from the mutt would have resulted in her death unless she was fortunate enough to get to Klaus before the poison took her life.

There had been a few nips at the backs of her legs, the backs of her shoulders... Nothing that had broken the skin - Caroline had made sure to be thorough in her checking once the wolf was rendered unable to continue its attack - but she hadn't wanted to kill it because it was a person. Someone's son or daughter, mother or father... She knew wolves; friends of hers that turned every full moon... They couldn't always be reasoned with even at their most rabid of states, but they also didn't turn on nights that didn't require it.

Knowing just how close each nip was to being a full bite, Caroline had been forced to attack before it could complete its own. Mid-run, the blonde had climbed up a short section of a tree she was running towards and flipped herself off and away from it so that she could land behind the beast of a canine. With her arms secured around the werewolf from behind, she tried her hardest to continue pleading with it to see reason: she was not a threat. She would not cause harm to it or its family, but growls turned to howls meant to lure other wolves... and those howls turned to thrashes that sent Caroline off the beast and onto her back.

It had been quick to move on top of her, snarling and snapping at her neck in hopes of locking on but Caroline's hands - braced against the beast's massive head - held it mere inches away as its breath hit her face with each despite attempt to either poison her or rip her head off her shoulders completely leaving her with no other choice than to feel her hands downward to the beast's neck and snap until she could roll the creature - whose life she had just taken - off of her body altogether.

Her hands - or rather her fingernails - had broken the werewolf's skin in the process of breaking its neck which was where the blood had come from. Blood that others would smell (both on the air and on her) the closer they got and while Caroline - who was a sniffling, tearful, shaken mess - wanted to do nothing more than grieve what had just happened and do the right thing by calling someone to the scene, she also knew that if she wanted to live to tell anyone the truth in what had happened, she needed to flea before other wolves located she and the body.

The body wouldn't stay in its wolf form for long after being killed. It would revert back to its human form which, truthfully, Caroline didn't know if she could handle seeing. It wasn't that so much as the faint howl in the distance that had her blue eyes snapping upward as she took off to the right of her surroundings rather than continuing straight on. She needed to get to safety, first and foremost, before she could do the right thing, whatever that might be...

Tyler had been running in the mountains that evening when he had heard a howl. He knew what that meant and did what instinct told him to. He ran towards what he already knew was an attack. It had to be. Things hadn't been that horrible, lately, but it was never too late to go sideways, and with his new position as Alpha, no matter how small the pack, he felt a new sense of responsibility, no matter who it was.

That, of course, took a turn when he got close enough to catch a scent. Caroline. Well, that definitely wasn't who drew him up here, but that was going to be who he went after. Let's be honest, it would nearly always be Caroline. It didn't take him long to track his ex-girlfriend. Being a hybrid gave him an edge that most werewolves didn't possess.

"Care!" He didn't wanna call too much attention to their location, as she was quietly making her exit, but he needed to make sure she was ok. Once she stopped, he saw the blood. The attack was over, and Caroline had clearly won.

His eyes went from her bloodied clothes and hands to her face, which looked absolutely terrified. He would never get used to seeing that face. He had seen it so much when the supernatural had first come into their lives, and even more so when Klaus had joined in. Tyler still didn't really understand how Caroline had ended up married to the guy who had once tried to force him to kill her.

"What the hell happened? Are you ok?" He was close enough now to check her over, and what he really wanted to know was if any of the blood was hers. It didn't seem like it, but the idea of her getting bitten was a nightmare he didn't wanna live out.

They hadn't been an "us" in the longest time, and that was Tyler's fault. Practically the entire town knew it. It didn't make difference, though, and it didn't mean he still wanted a relationship with her. It was over, he had accepted that, but he would always love Caroline Forbes. He would never stop caring for her because she was really the first girl he had ever actually cared about. It was so easy for them to still hang out together and talk and be themselves and if it pissed off Klaus (which it always did), that was just a bonus!

Tyler wondered where the big bad Original was now. Why the fuck wasn't he at Caroline's side when she was alone in the mountains being attacked? He would be the last person to ever suggest that Caroline needed a bodyguard (she'd probably kill him for even thinking it), but it definitely annoyed Tyler that the guy that won the heart of the girl he loved was nowhere to be found when she needed him.

THANKS KAY

Caroline knew all too well the dangers that came with picking fights with werewolves; how many times had she been caught in the crossfires and ended up bitten by a werewolf as a direct result? The last thing that the blonde vampire ever wanted for herself was to endure a werewolf bite to the very end - her death. They were excruciating and probably one of the worst ways that a vampire like Caroline could die; why would she ever wish that on anyone, let alone herself?

That didn't mean that every now and again a werewolf didn't cross a vampire on purpose. Perhaps because they were stuck in the mindset that all vampires were evil - which was far from true - or that a vampire was getting too close for comfort which was completely unintentional. Other times, like that evening, a werewolf simply thought it'd be better to try and rid the world of a vampire before it ever tried to rid the world of it.

The sound of her name being called through the cold air was bittersweet; Caroline knew exactly who the voice belonged to as she had heard him saying, whispering and shouting her name a thousand times over in the past. This voice belonged to someone she had been head over heels in love with; someone she would always be head over heels in love with. Someone who was as much a werewolf as the man (or woman) she had just killed.

Caroline didn't want Tyler to see her like this. She didn't want him to think less of her because she had just taken the life of someone more like him. She couldn't bear to look him in the eyes and for him to see the monster that she fought so hard to keep from her friends and her family members simply because she didn't want to ever be that person. She didn't ever want to be like Damon or like Ripper-Stefan...

The blonde had had every intention of making a run for it if only to get herself away from Tyler in an effort to avoid the situation that was creeping up on her, but she underestimated just how damn fast he could be when he really wanted to. Her blue eyes were wide with panic and slight shock at the fact that she was now standing there bloodied and in front of Tyler Lockwood, of all people. The last person she wanted to ever have to explain herself to.

"I..." She was fine. No wounds, no bruises, no broken bones or dislocations. Her head was still firmly attached to her shoulders and she wasn't set on fire, so really... this could be considered one of her health's better days. "I was attacked; I didn't want to..." Her voice broke and trailed off; she hadn't wanted to take another life. Thinking about the fact that this was blood on her hands she'd never be able to wash off broke her heart just as much as the first human life she had ever taken had.

Nothing would ever change that.

It was very rare for Caroline Forbes to sound so small. She was a warrior, a fighter, a survivor. Tyler had watched her go through things that no one at their age ever should, and she took most of it in stride. Just about every decision she made (Klaus as the lone exception) was an impressive one, leading right up to becoming a mother, and a beautiful one at that.

Tyler didn’t have the same track record. He regretted many moments in his life, and if he actually made a list he was sure the majority would involve the bloodied vampire standing in front of him. He hated that fact. It had gone unspoken between them, but he was sure she knew.

”It’s ok.” He said, moving closer to her. All he wanted right now was to hug her, hold her, protect her…something, anything to make her feel better about the situation they were now in. One thing stopped him. Yes, they had hung out and spent time together since he had returned to the area and they had for the most part settled their past…but Tyler had no clue where he truly stood with her and if he wasn’t the person she wanted by her side in this then he would step back once he was assured she was safe.

He held out a hand as an offer to help. ”Let’s get you out of here, first, ok? Then we can talk.” That was the priority, to not be in the dark woods waiting for a secondary attack. There was no telling who would show up at the noise they had made, and there was a very slim chance it would be a good outcome.

He hoped they could talk, but Tyler had decided a long time ago that he didn’t deserve a thing from his ex. If Caroline told him she didn't need his help, he would retreat. He’d probably follow her at a distance to help if necessary, but he would respect her enough to keep his distance if it’s something she wanted.

Their situation was a unique one, and he hadn’t been in a position like this in a while. Tyler had mostly kept his head down since returning to his friends. The biggest choices he had made were buying the Grille with Matt and agreeing to Hayleys insane idea to create their own pack. That was about all he could handle at the moment. Truth be told, he was still licking his wounds over Caroline and just about anything he said or did when she was involved was loaded with unspoken words and feelings.

He was definitely to blame for the way things were now. He had been such an ass. It truly surprised him that she had accepted him back into her life the way she had. But he still knew the way he felt wasn’t mutual. He had come to accept it, but it didn’t stop him from trying to make it up to her whenever possible. She deserved as much.

THANKS KAY

One of the last people that Caroline had been expecting to see was Tyler Lockwood. Hell, one of the last people that Caroline had been wanting to see was Tyler Lockwood, not because they had bad history between them - they did in some ways, yes - but because Caroline knew all too well just how protective Tyler could be when it came to other werewolves.

His loyalty to other wolves had caused a lot of tension in his and Caroline's relationship; he was always so damn quick to align himself with anything on four legs that liked to hump things during the full moon... He didn't even have to know them well; if they shared DNA with dogs, Tyler was all for protecting them, sometimes at the risk of his friends and the people - like Caroline - who loved him most.

Part of her fear over what had happened was knowing that Tyler might have an aggressive reaction. She had technically killed one of his own; even though he was a hybrid now, his loyalty was still with the wolves rather than the hybrids, nine times out of ten. On top of that, Tyler was known for having a temper and the last thing that Caroline wanted for herself was to end up on the wrong side of it, now of all times... It was bad enough she might be facing the wrath of Marcel if he caught wind of what took place here tonight...

She was able to chalk part of her mild hysteria down to that: admitting what she had done to someone like Tyler was one of her worst fears. At least Damon could somewhat understand; he didn't have as big a heart (or conscience) as Caroline did so taking a life never really hit Damon like it did Caroline, but he understood the mechanics of the act, itself. He understood how to deal with it in a time-effective way and how to ensure her own safety following the back-lash.

Her blue eyes watched him as he moved closer; she wasn't at all intimidated by it given just how much she trusted Tyler, but for the briefest of seconds, she forgot that she hadn't filled in the blanks and it felt as though her un-beating heart had been beating wildly in her chest and skipped a few thuds. The anxiety and the worry that he might be trying to restrain her or circle her as if he were sizing her up...

But he wasn't. Because he didn't know what she did... Maybe he'd have an inkling if he could smell the other wolf's blood on her. She didn't want to think about that.

Her eyes flickered down to his large, warm hand as it extended out towards her. Her won small, cold hand slipping into it comfortably. It was... familiar, to say the very least. How perfectly her hand fit into his; how perfect his temperature was against her own skin, warming it up so she could feel what it was like to be full of warmth again, much as she had been when she had been human. That had been one of the best things about being able to touch Tyler... he had made her feel like she was still alive.

Sometimes she missed that.

"Where do you have in mind?" Because Caroline's own mind couldn't function long enough to figure out where a safe area to hide out for a short time would be. She needed to catch her metaphoric breath. Clean up, regain her focus... and, of course, reach out to Damon. Something that Tyler might be less understanding of, but as much as Caroline hated to admit it... it was necessary. Almost desperately.

Tyler picking sides was something they always came back to. Loyalty was something Ty was always tripping over, but when his werewolf gene got triggered things had changed. He felt like he had rules and guidelines. Black and white he could handle.

It was when Klaus had gotten involved where that had all fallen apart. Being sired to the original hybrid wasn't ever fun, save for the fact that he was an actual hybrid now...which may not have been "fun" but it definitely proved useful.

Klaus had been the downfall of Tyler and he didn't think there would ever be a time where he didn't purely despise Caroline's husband. Their war had started long before Avalina came to be and everything personal with Carlina had just been a casualty of the fight.

It was perhaps why Tyler hated him so much. There was no need for her to be a part of this. Caroline had already been through enough before Klaus got involved and watching him make the lives of everyone he cared about more difficult was so beyond infuriating.

If there was one thing Tyler hated, it was being out of control, and with Klaus control was never an option. In this situation, however, Tyler seemed to be the only one in control. Caroline was terrified and he needed to do something to get them safe.

Something Tyler had come to realize with his new position was it was a lot more complicated than black and white and that had honestly turned his world a bit upside down. So he reverted back. It was a messier philosophy, but a simple one nonetheless. Friends got priority and he didn't give a shit what they were. If he loved them, they were worth fighting for. End of story.

This decision was what lead him to his next statement. "My house isn't far from here. We can go there if that's ok?" He was almost certain Hayley would be out drinking, and she was intuitive enough to know to make herself scarce if he came home with Caroline of all people.

He was thankful Hayley had never been the sort to read too much into things. They had gotten close quite easily, but it hadn't gone farther than that and they both liked it that way. She reminded him of a more badass version of Elena, honestly, and she always kept him on his toes.

What was better was that she hated Marcel and Klaus nearly as much as Tyler hated them. The knowledge she had gained behind Marcels doors helped Tyler understand more of the wolves side of things, especially in this town.

THANKS KAY

Caroline knew just how easy it was for lines between her and Tyler to find themselves blurring; they had had such a long history together ranging from her dating his best friend to the two of them eventually falling in love with each other. There had been a lot of break-ups and make-ups but they had always found their way through things, one way or another.

Sometimes it was still hard being around him, not because Caroline ever blamed him for what had happened between them - they were both equally responsible - but because she still had feelings for him. Once you loved someone as thoroughly as they had loved each other, you couldn't shut it off or shut it out. It was always there in the back of your mind and that could prove to be dangerous, but both knew it was best left unsaid. Bringing up the past and bringing up the spark they still shared would only prove to be a war neither were willing to fight, as there would be more casualties than victors.

And the last thing Caroline wanted was to see someone in her life dead at the hands of Klaus' temper.

Hearing that his house wasn't too far from there had Caroline feeling hopeful that maybe there was a way out of this situation if they moved quickly enough. It also had her feeling a slight pang of sadness. He had been living in New Orleans for how long now, and she had never so much as visited the home he had purchased for himself?

There were a lot of things that the blonde vampire needed to work on. Her friendships with the people she had known all of her life back in the small town of Mystic Falls was one of them.

"If you don't think that'll cause more damage than good?" The last thing that Caroline wanted was to bring a pack of angry werewolves to Tyler's door. Claiming him to be a traitor for protecting the vampire that had had to take a life to save her own... Tyler didn't deserve to be dragged into yet another of Caroline's messes; he had endured enough...

Tyler found it difficult to find that line between him and Caroline. He wasn't sure he'd ever get it right, honestly, and at this point he wasn't sure if she cared. There would always be the dynamic there and Tyler was ok with that.

Logically, he knew that Klaus would have a major issue with their relationship, but Tyler had a feeling that Caroline wouldn't let that come between them and after everything that had happened, Tyler would die before letting Klaus control him again.

Their war was over. Tyler was done. He had somehow found a way to move on and he was happy with his life. It was weird being an adult all of the sudden, with responsibilities of running a business and being an alpha. It wasn't like he was a pro at either thing, but he had started to figure it out and he was enjoying himself.

It's not like I'm a stranger to trouble." He joked with a small smile. He knew she meant well, he knew that she was too caring to ever put him in a position where he could get hurt. But self preservation hadn't been Tyler's style in quite a while now. Maybe Caroline hadn't exactly been around to figure that out, but he would make damn sure she knew now.

He took her hand softly, the idea that he didn't want to make her uncomfortable in the back of his mind. "It's fine, really. Let's get you out of here." If someone was going to come after her, he would much rather it be at a house with weapons and potentially more people on his side rather than out in the open in the dark like this.

Something that he wasn't exactly used to yet was that this town was ruled by people you couldn't quite define as the "good guys" where as in Mystic Falls, there were safe places. There were people to back you up when you ran into trouble like this. Those people were still around them, they had all moved to New Orleans...but this city was so different. Tensions were too high to feel a real sense of safety anywhere other than a private home of someone you trusted.

Tyler knew that being Caroline Forbes was both a blessing and a curse in this environment. She had as many enemies as she had friends and sometimes those blurred together way more than Tyler was comfortable with.

Considering the both of them had vampire speed, getting to Tyler's home in a timely manner wasn't an issue. Tyler was thankful for that since they could hear the wolves howling from his front yard. His mind wondered to which pack would potentially be at his door soon, and none of the answers he could come up with were good. The only ones that he knew of to run the mountains frequently & randomly attack a vampire would be the Crescents or the Valadiks...

Either option was impending disaster. The crescents showing up to Hayleys new home owned by her new Alpha to handle a murder would be more drama than Tyler wanted to deal with and the Valadiks were a nightmare in themselves, and Tyler hadn't even gotten the "pleasure" of meeting them yet.

Sure there were lone wolfs in the mountains, wolves in New Orleans got the short straw too many times to keep track. Packs were broken and attempting to heal. But the amount of noise coming from the mountains now, after what he had just witnessed, that told him that whoever Caroline had killed wasn't on their own.

THANKS KAY

i can

There were a lot of people that couldn't quite grasp the thought of Caroline and Klaus' relationship; it was so different from anything else she had done, and Klaus was so different from anyone else that Caroline had dated. At least as far as anyone on the outside looking in was concerned.

The truth was... if you looked at the timeline of Caroline's dating history, you would see a young girl dabbling in something that was a little darker each time. She refused to count Damon as her first relationship simply because everything between them had been forced through compulsion, but Matt was her first taste of something true. He just hadn't been able to keep up with the wildness and the darkness that lived inside of Caroline now that she was caught somewhere between a hopeless romantic of a human and a predator of a vampire.

After that came Tyler who had always danced a fine line somewhere between compassionate and chaotic. He wasn't entirely good, but he was nowhere near evil, either. He was a happy blend of everything that Caroline had thought herself to be, but they had just always seemed unable to make things work out for the best.

Klaus shouldn't have been the next step forward; he didn't dance much of any line between anything; he wasn't a chaotic good or a neutral evil. Everything about him radiated sin, and the only times he seemed to care were when his humanity was sparked just enough to calm his raging ego for a few seconds at a time.

Perhaps there was a piece of Caroline that had always thought she'd be able to tame the baddest of bad boys, or that her wildness would learn a thing or two from his. Maybe she'd feel more human by being with a monster, or maybe she'd accept that she, like he, was born to radiate misery in all shapes and forms. Either way, Caroline had moved on to darker darks and worse evils in a hope of bringing some light and some good to Klaus' life.

Caroline knew all too well that there were few rules that Tyler played by, even these days. Still, that didn't mean that she was longing to bring trouble his way simply because the thought of him being her knight in shining armour (again) might be giving her a sick kind of thrill. It was nostalgic, that much she could comprehend; she was young, tied down and trying to be the good girl that Elena had always been; the title her best friend was proud to own. The title Caroline had always been jealous to not possess for herself.

The warmth of his hand compared to her cold skin felt as though there had been actual sparks igniting between the two for a moment. It was a sensation Caroline had let herself forget about; werewolves always ran a warmer temperature than vampires (for obvious reasons), but that had been one of the many things that she had had to let go when she and Tyler had parted ways. It continued to be one of the many things she forced herself to forget about, lest she find herself missing the way he touched her, kissed her, loved her...

Her blue eyes were on his large hand holding hers as she tried to listen to the words he was speaking. She knew that it was in their best intention to get the hell out of the woods and beeline for safety, wherever they decided that would be. Tyler's house, Damon's house, anywhere where they could defend themselves with the odds in their favour should the wolves decide to hunt Caroline down for what had transpired in the woods that evening.

The blonde vampire moved blind, or so it felt, as she let Tyler lead her to his front door. There was an anxiety - a hesitancy - as she wanted to shake her head and tell him that they needed to go somewhere else. Anywhere else. She didn't want to make him as much of a target as she surely was, and given the lingering scent of another vampire, the 'roommate' that Tyler had mentioned perhaps once or twice in passing, it could be more than just their lives on the line.

Yet for the briefest of moments? Caroline didn't care that the female werewolf's life was on the line. A burning, bubbling jealousy tore through her throat - one that she had no right to. She held absolutely no claim on Tyler, and he was free to do whatever, or whomever, he wanted.

With the wolves howling in anger, devastation and determination as it echoed down over Tyler's home, Caroline found herself unable to care about those simple rules. Her emotions were blurring the lines that were meant to be deeply and clearly drawn in the metaphorical sand as her hands gripped the front of Tyler's shirt. Her vampire strength pushing the hybrid werewolf back against his front door as her lips found his. It wasn't logical, it wasn't appropriate and it sure as hell wasn't Caroline's place to be kissing her ex-boyfriend on his front doorstep with a death sentence hanging overhead, but Caroline didn't care. If she was going to be torn limb-from-limb by a pack of enraged werewolves, she wasn't going without a fight or without a single regret lurking beneath the surface.

There were things in life that you didn’t know you needed till you had it. There were things you knew for sure was the worst for you. Then, there were those things that you knew all along you needed, but maybe didn’t quite deserve. For Tyler, Caroline Forbes was the latter.

The idea that this incredible person had wanted him even for a moment was mind-boggling enough, and Tyler knew logically that this moment would not last, that no matter his feelings, at the end of the day, Caroline was with Klaus and that was that. But Tyler was also not the type of person to deny such a perfect opportunity.

So when the blonde vampire that had stolen his heart so long ago grabbed him by the shirt and kissed him as passionately as she did, he didn’t question a thing. He put his hands on her waist and held her close to him, kissing her back, returning all of the emotion he could feel radiating off of her.

Their relationship had been complicated and dramatic, and Tyler couldn’t even tell you how they had ended up like this, except that it was likely 100% his fault. But in their time apart, Tyler had grown from the idiotic boy Caroline once knew, and even though he knew that he could be deserving of her now, he also knew that it was too late.

So, upon returning to New Orleans, he had accepted it graciously…well, maybe less than gracious. Teasing Klaus was too fun, and falling into step with Caroline as one of his best friends was too easy. They had always been able to read each other, call each other out on their bullshit, and trust that the other had their back with an act now, ask questions later attitude.

But Tyler’s brain wasn’t quite processing what this meant. He wasn’t questioning whether or not this would lead to anything further, he wasn’t thinking about how his death was now just that much more imminent, not just by the wolves looming in the forest, but by Caroline’s husband. He was just thinking about how comfortable this was, how it felt to have her back in his arms like this.

A small voice in the back of his mind stole him away from this cherished moment to remind him :get inside, you idiot…and so he did. As one hand wrapped around Caroline’s waist, the other left it, opening the doorknob behind him. He pulled her in with him, his lips never leaving hers, and then flipped the script on her, pushing her against the door this time, now [somewhat] safely inside.

He heard footsteps but didn’t process the consequences till a small laugh came from the stairs. ”I’m heading out. Have fun, kids. But when you die, make sure you’ve left the house to me.” Hayley grinned before heading down the hall to the garage.

Tyler pulled back slightly and rested his forehead against Caroline. He sighed but he still had a small smile as he studied her. He knew the house was empty now, and they could certainly do as they pleased, but he had a feeling Caroline would come to her senses soon enough. ”I missed you.” He let it slip out before the moment was truly over before she had a chance to pull away.

THANKS KAY

i can
feel you again; i miss you
The crazy thing about love was that no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't reverse it once you had fallen into it. Even though Tyler was considered to be Caroline's high school sweetheart - a lover she was meant to forget as she continued on through life - that wasn't entirely the case. He may have been her high school sweetheart and he may have been her first true love, but Caroline was an immortal teenager. Her teenage loves would be just as strong and just as true as any other love she experienced.

To put it simply, there was no getting over Tyler Lockwood, regardless of what Caroline did with her life, or who she chose to spend her time with. She would always love the man she had fallen for in high school, and she would always long to be with him, regardless of where their lives brought them. Perhaps there was a small sliver of hope lingering in the back of her mind that they might find their way back to each other, but it was a hope that Caroline left unspoken.

She knew that there was a very real chance that Tyler had since moved on from her, or that his own feelings for the blonde vampire had ceased to exist. Really, the two hadn't spoken of anything between them, be it friendship or otherwise, since they had parted ways. It was very likely that he wound end her advance before it grew into anything more than exactly that. An advance.

But he didn't.

His hands were warm against her waist in an effort to pull her up against his body as he kissed her right back. It was so easy to fall back into his hands, his arms, his touch... Perhaps it was a little too easy. Maybe that meant something more than she thought it would, maybe it was something she was meant to be suppressing.

Tyler had moved the two of them into his home, likely still thinking about their safety even through the heat of the moment which was more than Caroline had been able to find herself able to do. She hadn't taken notice to just how overpowering the scent was of the woman that was living with Tyler; if she had been able to do so, she'd have known that they weren't alone. It was Hayley's voice interrupting the moment that had Tyler pulling back from this kiss that he had re-initiated from inside his home.

His forehead was warm against hers as Caroline remained pressed flush against the inside of the front door. She could feel his warm breath against her face as he sighed; the house empty except for the two of them.

She knew this was the moment where she was supposed to be the adult that Klaus wanted her to be; she knew this was the moment where she was supposed to collect her bearings, excuse her actions with apologies and walk out the front door once and for all, but how the hell could she do that with his face still against hers? How could she do that when his hands were still holding her waist against his front door?

They were alone. No one knew where they were, and there was a very real chance that they could be dying tonight should the wolves track them down and confront the pair here... Maybe there was a chance that Caroline could keep not caring, even if only for a little while longer.

Pressing her lips against Tyler's once again - though this time gently and softer - she let a small smile touch her lips through the kiss in reply to his words. "I missed you, too..."

He. Still. Loved. Her.

That was the honest truth and he had pushed it aside for so long because he knew that he didn't have a chance. If Klaus Mikaelson could win her heart after everything he had done, then it was likely that Tyler couldn't do enough to split that up. Besides, there was a daughter in the mix, now. Was their relationship worth potentially splitting up Avelinas home?

And yet, here he was kissing a married woman. But, it was Caroline Forbes. There had to be some sort of exception for this? What was he supposed to do? Lay it out there (might as well, they could die tonight, after all) and tell her that he wanted her, but not like this. That could work, but Caroline wasn't the type to take an ultimatum and morally, he couldn't ask that of her. Besides, what if she chose the obvious choice? She'd never leave Klaus.

He could take this as far as she'd let him, continue digging his proverbial hole. It wasn't like he actually gave a fuck what Klaus thought. Then again, he could stand his moral ground and be a gentleman. He could do what she obviously had no plans of doing and stop this while they were ahead. Would she respect that? Would she see that he's finally changed?

Either option, he was thinking selfishly. It was less about what was right or wrong and more about how it would work in his favor in the future. That's not who he wanted to be, even though he could almost justify it because of who she was to him.

His hands moved to cup her cheeks as he kissed her again softly before pulling away gently. "Care..." He started cautiously, still not really knowing what he wanted to put out there. [/b]"I don't want to be something you regret."[/b] He said softly.

He didn't want to hurt her feelings or embarrass her because he did want this, but he wasn't sure that she really did. There had been no evidence that this was how she still felt about him and he didn't want either of them getting hurt because it was so easy to fall into that passion fuelled relationship they had been in so long ago.

"I don't care what anyone else thinks but you." He wanted to be clear on this. He wasn't backing off because he was afraid of Klaus or anyone else. "But I don't want to be a mistake for you..." There was a silence for a moment as he worked himself up to finish the sentence. "I love you too much for that."

There. He said it. Immenant death potentially at their doorstep told him this may have not been the best time to start this conversation but, honestly, what time would be better? He needed to say it. It had been too long and for her to kiss him like that he knew better than to think there wasn't anything there between them. He just hoped it was enough.

THANKS KAY

i can
feel you again; i miss you
There was no denying that much of Caroline's young life centered around her need to feel loved. She had lost the affection of her father when he had left she and her mother behind and had lost his respect when he had learned that she was a vampire. Her mother had been just as accepting before she came around, but having lost her mother just a little over a year ago still had Caroline reeling from yet another lack of affection.

She missed the people that she had lost. She had replaced the hole her father had left in her world with a relationship with Matt that was destined to shatter, and it had.

Tyler was the one good thing that had come from those dark years as Caroline navigated life as a vampire that felt heightened sadness and loneliness. They stumbled more times than they were stable, but their love for each other had been pure and from a good place, all things considered. She hadn't been trying to replace Matt when she had fallen for Tyler, but having seen Elena finding her big love with Stefan had had Caroline's heart aching for that same epic love.

Was it safe to say her relationship with Klaus had replaced her failed relationship with Tyler? Perhaps. That wasn't to discount the feelings she had watched grow for him, much as they had for Matt once upon a time ago. All of her relationships had blossomed from true feelings, but only one had grown from a place of self-realization rather than self-preservation.

Kissing Tyler wasn't a move that Caroline would have ever wanted herself to make while still in a relationship with somebody else; she had always prided herself on being faithful and the thought that she was dancing along that dangerous line made her stomach turn ever so slightly.

Feeling the heavy warmth of his hands cupping her cheeks, Caroline found it so easy to melt into him, much as she had always been able to do. The way he spoke the nickname she had only ever let him use for her, the softness of his voice...

And yet Caroline knew his next words were right. If they pushed this any further than it had already gone, both would regret it. Caroline would regret ever letting herself be that girl, the girl that was okay with being unfaithful. The girl that no one would be able to trust from that moment forward, and Tyler? If this got out, Tyler would be subjected to Klaus' wrath like never before.

Letting her body fall back against the wall behind her as she blew out a breath that had the tendrils of hair blowing away from her face, Caroline was feeling a bit defeated, beyond frustrated and slightly more level-headed than before.

She wanted to speak up and tell him that he would never, ever be a mistake to him, but his next words took the blonde by surprise, though she supposed it shouldn't have been too much of a shock to hear that he still loved her.

A small smile crept onto her lips, one that seemed to have her eyes crinkling in delight as she leaned back against the wall. Blue eyes on his brown ones as she let the outside dangers fade to the back of her mind if only for the most brief of seconds.

"You still love me?"

Seeing the way she brightened up at those three words almost made him second guess his decision to not carry her away to his bedroom. He swore her eyes were ten shades bluer than they were 30 seconds ago.

He laughed a little, knowing he should probably move away from her but not really wanting to now that they were this close. "Of course, I do." He offered softly. It couldn't be a surprise to her, could it? Caroline Forbes was the most intuitive person he'd ever met. He watched her eyes for a moment, trying to see how this revelation sat with her before leaning in to gently kiss her cheek.

"Do you want to get cleaned up?" He offered, stepping away from her a respectable distance. She was still covered in blood, although she had already healed. Those vampire powers were good for something every now and then. Tyler knew Hayley wouldn't mind if she borrowed some fresh clothes, and there was plenty of bottles that were a complete mystery to him in an upstairs bathroom that Caroline was sure to be pleased with.

He wasn't sure where to go from there, though. "Then I could take you home or.." He trailed off, looking around. At this point, his mind wasn't in the gutter, but it wasn't like he would actually turn down Caroline wanting to stick around. He missed spending time with her, and no matter the circumstance he was happy to have that back in some form.

They could watch a movie or catch up. If she was tired, Tyler would offer her a room without hesitation. If he couldn't be anything else to her...if she didn't want him to be anything else to her, he knew he could handle being her friend. Honestly, he would love that. Anything was better than the shitshow they had previously been through or the weird limbo they had more recently been in.

Sometimes you just didn't get the one and if she was happy, he could find some sort of peace with that. Tyler had already started rebuilding his life with that idea in mind. His world wouldn't end if nothing came of tonight. But he'd be damned if he didn't try to show her that he hadn't been lying. He did love her.

THANKS KAY
