raphael lee miller
Raphael Miller was born a werewolf but had a fairly normal life until he was eighteen years old. His parents were killed in a car accident just two days after his younger sister Ahnnalee was born. Rafe dropped everything, including all of his Freshman year college courses, to raise her.
He had only just started with general education courses, but he had always loved sports and was set on eventually going into coaching or training...something on that level, but it just wasn't something that would make the money they needed to survive. So Raphael left school to take on any jobs he could find, mostly construction work, to provide for Ahnnalee. His only goal was to keep her safe and out of foster care.
Because he didn't get a chance to complete his college courses and he knew that was exactly why he was stuck working shitty jobs to make the money they needed, he pushed Ahnnalee very hard to do well in school and get a good education. He did not want to be the reason she didn't get everything she wanted in life. He didn't want to fail her as a brother and guardian.
When Ahnnalee met Travis Olson in high school, Raphael was more than hesitant. It was hard seeing his little sister become so serious with someone she had just met, but he knew the opportunities that came with Travis' pack were too good to pass up. They joined the pack and as long as she promised to stay in school, he sat back and watched his little sister fall in love.
She had just finished up her Associate's degree when all hell broke loose. A group of hunters ripped through their hometown, leaving a path of death and destruction. The pack was separated, desperate to stay alive, and Rafe went three years without knowing if Ahnnalee was alive or dead....if any of them were alive or dead.
It was hell. He really struggled with the idea that he had failed his parents and his sister by letting this happen. If he had taken better care of her, if he had moved them, if he hadn't joined the pack....all these ifs just clouded his mind and in his only escape from this reality was alcohol. He fell into a dependent state without really noticing, and it took finally reuniting with his pack to understand the full capacity of his habits.
That didn't change anything, though. He just got good at hiding it. They would make too big of a deal of it. Ahnnalee would just worry. It wasn't that important of an issue. He had it under control...or not. He was on a particularly large bender the night of his accident and when he flipped his car, he didn't even have time to realize what was happening.
Now, waking up to his sister's devastation and his packs full-on reality check will not be a happy reunion. It will be hard. He'll have a long road ahead of him. There will be therapy, both alcohol-related & physical. His body is not in the athletic shape it once was in and he will struggle a lot with the weight of his decisions. But this is the best thing for him. This is what he needed and he'll realize that eventually.
