breathe again beneath the flames
im a man that cant be tamed
Clint couldn’t remember the last time he was nervous. He never let anything get to him, because he played it off as a joke. That was how he always had shaken things off, laughed at them till they were over.

But as he woke up on the first day of Fall, far too early for a man who slept all day, the archer could fell his heartbeat racing with nerves. Today was important. Probably one of the most important days he would ever have. The thought of today had been in his mind for a while now, a very long while. But now that it was here he felt that nervous energy flowing through every nerve.

Today was the day that Clint Barton was going to propose to Kamila Maximoff.

She knew it was coming, he only had been talking about it for almost a year now. She just didn’t know it was going to be today. But from the moment that he met her, Clint fell in love. And he knew only a little while after that he wanted to marry her, to be a real husband to her. The ring he found a little while before their first Christmas, saving it for the time he knew would be right for them both.

And then they got captured by Division.

He still had a few sleepless nights about that…about what the threatened to take from him. He could still hear the voice of Alexander Pierce in his ears when he lay awake next to the love of his life. His friendly offers and hidden threats to take her away from him once and for all. The man might be long gone now, but his words and voice would never die in Clint’s mind…and for that Clint could kill him all over again.

He knew after being taken he wouldn’t be able to wait much longer before proposing to Kamila. Their lives could be taken from them at anytime. In a blink of an eye it could happen , and Clint wasn’t going to sit around with that looming to just not make sure no matter what time they have, it was linked together. One year or Fifty or a hundred…. Clint would spend them married to the woman that made him feel alive again.

His friends knew to extent what was going on. His sister Delilah had found the ring, Nat got the date of the proposal out of him, and Steve knew what week it would be. But he made sure that the way he did it was going to be kept to himself. He had been preparing so long for this that he wanted it perfect.

It started off with a note, telling Kamila to come outside. Which then led down a pathway, lined with the glowing red lanterns that could be seen in the dim light of dusk. Each lantern had a different memory he held dear of them together attached. The first night they met…the night she adopted their three kittens, then the night they adopted their two otters. The night she stayed over, and the day that his room turned into their room together. Clint had plenty of good memories to put on them…because Kamila made every memory a better one.

Down the path they led to a small range he had set up, a few targets just a little while away. But the clearing was again filled with the red glow of every lantern that hung from trees and littered the ground. He’d be there waiting, trying to act like it was just a normal day where he’d be helping her learn the bow. He was glad she wouldn’t be able to hear how fast his heart raced, or feel the ring that burned in his pocket as he itched to hold it.

Shooting a bow might not be a very romantic gesture for some people, but Clint wanted part of him to be in the proposal. And there was nothing more personal then his bow. He didn’t teach people how to use them, never took anyone under his wing, or helped anyone with it, because his bow was his extension of himself. His lifeline since he was a kid. Except Kamila… For her he would share every part of himself, even that.

And so there Clint waited, bow leaning against him as he debated seriously if he should of worn a suit. He wanted this to be good for Kamila…to be perfect for her. But a suit would of said what it was already…and Clint also wanted it to be a surprise.

But even with the nerves in him, he couldn’t help the smile that spread on his face, just seeing her walk into the clearing where he waited. " Hey there baby, ready to practice?" He hoped it sounded normal and not like the excited nerves that he was feeling.

Loves were always difficult in their own ways, regardless of what type of love it was. Parents argued with their children, and children rebelled against their parents. Friends feuded, co-workers gossiped and lovers quarrelled. No love was perfect and no love was predictable.

Kamila hadn't had any intentions to love anyone when she had happened upon New Orleans. The only business she had with the city centered around Tony Stark and the blame she had placed on him for what had happened to her parents and the city she had once called her own. There was nothing left of her world; placing the blame on Tony had been in error and that was something she would forever have to live with, but even people who did monstrous things somehow stumbled upon pebbles of good in their rubble of destruction.

Clint Barton had been obnoxious when he had first happened upon the twins. Eager to know more about them when they weren't willing to disclose anything to unfamiliar faces, yet he and Steve Rogers - who would quickly become both Kamila and Clint's closest friend - burrowed their way into Kamila's heart quicker than anyone ever had.

It was almost shocking just how quickly she had allowed herself to open up to someone that her brother seemed to hate. Especially when Clint had let the world know at the end of the first day he had ever spoken to Kamila that he would one day marry her. It was a romantic gesture, to proclaim that in front of anyone willing to hear what he was saying; Kamila couldn't lie and say that she hadn't felt the slightest bit giddy at the thought that a man as attractive and seemingly kindhearted as Clint Barton wanted anything to do with her.

But he had. He had supported her hurried and misguided decisions where Tony Stark was concerned and he had defended her against those that had wanted to metaphorically (and somewhat literally) crucify her for those wrongdoings. He stood by her side as she accepted each harsh comment and held her during each night she spent crying out of shame and guilt for all she had done to two extremely innocent beings.

They were in love, there was no denying that. Clint's apartment, somewhere along the line, became Kamila's apartment, too. From there, they had added other lives into their domesticated little world. The kitten triplets that Kamila had found when they were merely days old, cold and starving. Clint had chosen English names for two of the kittens in an effort to help his girlfriend with her English, Pumpkin and Cinnamon, while Kamila broadened her knowledge of the English language by Googling names until she settled on Munchkin for the third.

The otters that the couple had adopted - a brother and a sister - had remained nameless until their best friend Steve had moved in with them. It was he who chose the names Caspian and Darling. While others might think their little life together was odd with so many pets and their best friend living with them, to Kamila, it was the epitome of home.

She had known that Clint had wanted to propose to her since the day the two had met, but she had realized just how serious he was on that matter weeks into their relationship. He had been the one to tell her he would wait for her world, after all. He wasn't wanting to catch her off guard and propose when she wasn't able to find herself ready for such a commitment. In that regard, Clint remained true to his word; he waited until Kamila had told him that she was finally ready for him to propose and from that moment on, he seemed eager to do just that.

He wasn't willing to spill any details to anyone. He knew that Steve would melt under Kamila's pouts and puppy eyes, so he hadn't said a word to their best friend about his proposal plans, and Kamila tried her hardest not to pressure her boyfriend too much about them. Instead, she busied herself with trying to find the engagement ring she knew he had bought months before, all while hoping to hear that his girlfriend was ready for him to use it.

The first day of fall was always one of Kamila's favourites; autumn was her favourite season for a great many reasons and she had been quite excited about the upcoming day. She just hadn't at all expected to be met with a note that asked her to come outside; she and Clint hadn't had anything special planned for that day, after all.

Wrapped up in one of her many fall sweaters, Kamila eagerly left the house and made her way outside, only to be graced with the sight of a pathway that was lined with glowing red lanterns. They flickered as day turned to night slowly overhead; the blonde stopping at each one as each had a different memory that she and Clint had shared together attached to them. Each and every single memory was a fond one; some were little things she thought he'd never remember enough to write out while others were big events - like adopting their fur-babies - that neither would ever forget. Regardless, each memory he had taken the time to revisit brought a warm smile to her lips.

Kamila hadn't even noticed she had come to the end of the glowing path until she reached for the next memory to read, only to find there wasn't one. Instead, she was forced to look around as she bit down on her bottom lip gently, taking in the sight of something that was all too familiar to her given just how passionate Clint was about archery.

It was a little amusing to think that he had gone to all this trouble just to give her some lessons... but she couldn't exactly put it past him given the two times Kamila had shot an arrow in the house without supervision, resulting in the deaths of a window and a lamp.

The glow of the lanterns probably weren't ideal lighting for such an activity, but Kamila knew that Clint had gone out of his way to make this romantic for her, and that this would just be the first step into her learning how to use a bow. It was a big deal, given just how reluctant he was when it came to him teaching anyone much of anything in regards to archery, so Kamila knew that this had taken a lot of nerve and a lot of patience for him; she was more grateful for that than she could possibly put into words.

She was positive she was showing just how excited she was; a beaming smile painted across her lips as she nodded eagerly in reply to his asking if she was ready to practice. Her steps towards him closed the distance between them; her words sounding just as excited as she was feeling. "Did you do all of this? It is beautiful... but I wish you would have telled me we would be shooting tonight; I would have wear something a little less nice..."

Her hands smoothed out the sweater dress she had been wearing around the house as she shrugged her shoulders gently. She didn't exactly have archery clothing - whatever archers wore - but she doubted that mattered much. It wasn't like the two were painting or doing anything to actually ruin her outfit, after all...

breathe again beneath the flames
im a man that cant be tamed
His eyes couldn’t leave her as she walked up to the area, the smile as easy as breathing when she was around. He wondered sometimes, if she really knew just how much she affected him. How many days he spent alone , with no smiles or laughs. How cold he once was before her. She saved him, and she might never really know it…but she did.

Clint thought that she looked beautiful in her sweater dress, knowing it would be one of many that she enjoyed wearing. Fall after all was her favorite time of year. But it wasn’t like he could exactly tell her she was dressed perfectly for what he was actually planning.

”Now why would I do that?” He gave her a playful wink, taking grasp of the bow leaning against his side and closing the distance between them. ” You in your outfit with a bow? Too good to pass up “ gently he passed the bow till she was holding it in her hand. ”Now it’s time for us to get to practicing.

Cling moved to an easy position behind her, gently turning her to face the target that was ahead of them. It wasn’t very far, an easy distance for her to hit her first shot after all. He moved gently taking her hands into his own over the bow so he could show her how to hold it. ” This is how you hold it, gentle at first, relaxed. The only time you should have tension on it is when you pull the string back.”

The marksman helped her pull the string of the bow back till it reached to her ear where he made sure to keep steady pressure with her. ” You have to be careful when you pull back though, if you don’t keep control of it, the string will snap forwards and cut your arm. Think about it like munchkin…if you pet her with just enough pressure she loves it. But too hard or soft she’ll turn and bite you. Well… not you. But she’ll bite me”

He trusted Kamila to listen, to try her best to do what he said. Letting go of her hands and moved to grab an arrow from the quiver on his back. With quick fingers, behind her and out of view he moved so the ring was secured to the arrow, his hands only starting to shake after he got it set up. He slid the arrow into the notch ready for her to fire towards the target.

” Okay…let go.” He didn’t mean for the words to be a whisper, but that’s how it ended up as emotions built up in him. For the first time with his permission, he watched the love his life fire the arrow with her engagement ring attached towards the target, grinning as she did and the red sparking lights shot up from behind it like he planned.

“ You better go get that arrow… We’ll need it for more practice” He spoke with a smile from behind her , even as his heart beat raced out of his chest. He slid to one knee, knowing the moment she grabbed the arrow , she would see the ring there.

”Kamila… I’ve been saying this day was coming for a while now. And I’m not the greatest with words but… I’ve loved you from the day I met you. You make every morning , day and night worth living. Even on days where I don’t even want to leave bed you are there for me, with me. I want to marry you…I want you to be Mrs. Barton and share even more than we do now. I love you…Will you marry me? “

This wasn't the first time that Kamila had ever held a bow in her hand, but this was the first time that Clint had ever handed her a bow to use on her own. Well, it wasn't exactly on her own, given it was his hands coming around from behind her to help her steady said bow, but this was as close as she knew she'd be getting to shooting something on her own, at least for the first little while.

She understood that archery required a great deal of restraint and control, two things that Kamila struggled with on a daily basis. Two things that Clint had spent years trying to perfect. Maybe there would be a time when she stopped fearing herself enough to allow her self the opportunity to gain the type of confidence archery (and her own abilities) required, but for now, Kamila was content ignoring her abilities and being nowhere as good an archer as Clint was.

The blonde was quiet as Clint carefully explained how she was to hold the bow, and how she was to draw the string back. It was a delicate dance, one that Kamila wasn't unfamiliar with given just how many times she had watched Clint perfect it while messing around with his bow in the back yard.

One thing she had never seen was the string snapping forward to cut his arm. He hadn't ever been distracted enough or unskilled enough for even the smallest of mistakes to allow that to happen. Perhaps in his earlier years he had had experience with a slipping string, but it would have happened long before Kamila had ever been in the picture.

Kamila cracked a bit of a smile at the mention of Munchkin; even she knew just how picky Munchkin was when it came to Clint, for whatever reason.

She allowed Clint to do all of the work; her hands remaining where he had placed them as he loaded the bow with an arrow and steadied her onto the target before them. It wasn't until he spoke again - a whisper in her ear - that Kamila's hands moved, releasing the string that he had instructed her to hold back.

To say that Kamila was proud of herself would be a massive understatement. While she had hit targets in the past, they weren't targets that she had been aiming for. This was the first time that she had ever hit something she had intended to hit, even if it was with Clint's help. As far as she was concerned, that still counted.

Instead of jumping with excitement - which she had fully intended on doing - Kamila jumped from the startle that the sparking red lights from behind the target had caused. Her smile beaming even more brightly as she realized that she hadn't blown something up accidentally, and that this was just another romantic surprise that Clint had likely planned out for their evening.

Her smile was turned to Clint as he told her that she should go get the arrow; an eager nod followed the blonde as she raced her way to the target, her hand wrapping around the arrow with a few struggled pulls as she tried to dislodge it; her hand shooting out to catch something with a hint of sparkle to it as it fell.

For a moment, Kamila thought she had severed the arrowhead from the arrow altogether and a small sense of panic set in, but whatever was being clutched in her hand felt far smaller.

Clint was speaking behind her, but everything felt as though it were in slow motion as she opened her hand to reveal the ring that she had been searching for for months. The ring that Delilah had claimed she found and hit back in its hiding spot, only for Clint to hide it elsewhere just to be safe. The ring that Steve hadn't wanted to see, in case he accidentally spilled the beans to Kamila. The ring that Clint had purchased a month into dating Kamila...

As she turned to face him with the ring held up between her index finger and her thumb, the look of shock on her face was well beyond apparent as words began to blurt past her lips faster than her mind could process them. "This is the ring!" Her excited words mixing and tangling with his around the exact moment that he asked her if she would marry him, still... Kamila had heard them even through her own.

Jumping up and down excitedly, Kamila was clapping her hands together as if she were unable to process just how god damn excited and ecstatic she were to finally have not only gotten the ring she had been so curious about for months now, but also the proposal from the man she was head over heels in love with.

"Yes! Yes I will marry you!"
