His head was spinning. There was no way that Jessica could be alive; he watched her burn on the roof of their bedroom. Then again, how many times had he and Dean made their way through Purgatory? It wasn’t impossible that this happened and yet…

He knew the one who had killed her. He saw her on fire, he watched as she burned on the ceiling of the home they shared and could do nothing to stop it, nothing to save her, and it was all his fault. She had died because of him, because he was trying to get out of the hunting business. Because he wanted him to lead his army. Sam wanted out, and Jessica paid for it with her life.

It had changed his life. That fateful day that he tried to turn down Dean’s plea to help him find their dad was the day he lost his future. He had never wanted the hunter life. When he had met Jessica, he saw another option for his life. He saw another direction, one that was supposed to end in happiness. White picket fence, 2.5 kids, a minivan…

That all came crashing down the minute he saw her on the ceiling and lost her. Gone, erased in that moment. From then on he was determined for revenge, for his mother and for Jessica and for his dad. For himself and for Dean…While they had taken care of Azazel, it didn’t change what he had done, and why.

Since then, Sam had lived with the guilt. People died because of him, and while he knew that he could not live like that, or ever be happy with that on his shoulders…It was hard to break that. Everything he did was to make sure that no one else died for him. Dean, Harlyn, Harper, Anna-Lynne, Ben, Ali, Eliza, Josh…He’d die before he let them get hurt.

And that was why he couldn’t just drop everything and believe that it was Jessica. Because he could be wrong. He was probably wrong. And he could not risk his family like that by being so fucking gullible.

As Ben rambled downstairs and shook her hand, he stared, slightly shocked. He knew what he was doing, and when nothing happened from his holy water or ring, Sam’s confusion only elevated. She explained what had happened before she had died, and accurately so. But any demon could easily read into his mind or have known that. Still…

He shook it away. Anna had every right to want her out, at least until they knew for sure. She had a baby, he had his twins…Well shit. That would be fun to explain to Jess, if she was legit…

He knew that anything he asked her, any demon would know. But he wasn’t willing to just let Anna shoot without knowing, or let her in without knowing either. He couldn’t make an objective decision on this. ”Let’s at least take this outside. Anna, Ben? Please?” He didn’t want to send Jessica, or whoever it was, out without answers, but he couldn’t risk having her in his house.

He took a few steps forward while indicating the open door, and as he ushered her outside he reached up above the doorjamb where he hid a long knife and discretely tucked it into his long sleeve, handy in case he needed to act fast.

Jessica had never been more relieved in her life. The second a boy bounded down the stairs and stepped in front of the bow pointed at her chest, she wanted to pick him up and hug him. He had kind eyes and looked as if he knew something the others didn’t, but of course, he was a kid. There was trust there that you simply didn’t find in adults.

Clearly someone or something had hurt the love of her life in the time that she had been away, exactly how much time had passed she still couldn’t figure out, but she knew something was very wrong. He didn’t seem happy, not to see her, not in general. She looked over the boy again at him as the blonde continued to threaten her. He was her only hope to escape alive. Jess had a feeling that she wouldn’t hesitate just for Ben’s sake.

At his offer to at least take it outside, Jess nodded softly, murmuring a quiet ”Thank you.”, but still afraid to make any sudden movement. She waited for their lead. As the situation seemed to defuse ever so slightly, Jess stole a glance around the room looking for any hint of an answer. Her mind wondered to who this girl was to Sam, maybe it had been so long that he had found love in someone else…but that didn’t make sense, did it? It couldn’t have been that long since Dean showed up in their house.

She had stared for a good while at herself in the mirror of that dingy motel room, and she didn’t look any different as she did yesterday, or…what seemed like yesterday. As she stepped back across the threshold that she was pretty sure to remember as the one that changed her life for good, she finally took an actual breath. Maybe if she was outside, the girl, Anna, might step back a bit.

She wasn’t very comfortable walking with her back turned, and it felt strange not to trust Sam, but she couldn’t help it. Not with weapons drawn and the hostility she could never had dreamed of. She was still very much trying to control her emotions, her mind racing to distract her from just collapsing all together in a mix of frustration and sadness. As she turned to face Sam again, she realized all she really wanted to know was how did they get here?

”Why would I be dead?” She asked again, her voice slightly stronger than it was inside the house. She wasn’t in a position to demand answers, but she deserved them. She hadn’t done anything to these people. She didn’t even know them. All she was guilty of was being in love with the man standing in front of her and being very, very, very confused.

THANKS KAY

I WISH YOU NEVER TOLD ME NOW, IT SEEMS TOO EASY TO TURN YOU DOWN. SOMEONE'S SLEEVE TO WIPE MY TEARS: IS YOUR HEART ON FIRE? SO BOWL ME OVER, BLACK AND BLUE. IT'S FAR TOO HARD TO SAY I LOVE YOU. MY HEART'S ON FIRE, BABE.

Anna-Lynne's blue eyes were easily able to pick up on the fact that Sam had armed himself as he practically rushed the other blonde out of the house. It was good that he was keeping a level head in this type of situation; she could tell that he was thrown off, but maybe that was what this girl - this thing - wanted. For him to let his guard down so that she could act against him in whatever way she may or may not be planning.

The last thing she ever wanted to see happen was a fight to be brought to their home. It was bad enough that the city was plagued with impure hearts and soulless beings, but for them to show up to the Winchester home looking to bring the fight to the unprepared family... well, that was another thing altogether. One that put the lives of the kids at risk just as much as the professionally trained adults.

There was a part of Anna-Lynne that wondered if she should join Sam outside or if he would be able to handle this being on his own. She knew he might want some privacy given the other blonde had a familiar face - one that Anna-Lynne wasn't at all familiar with, of course - but there was another part of Anna-Lynne that knew she couldn't protect the kids - her own infant, included - if she didn't know what was happening.

If Sam lost to this woman and she blew her way back inside like she owned the place, whose to say that Anna-Lynne could get to a weapon quickly enough to fend her off? She knew deep down that it was better to be cautious rather than to watch the situation quickly become a worst case scenario when she could have easily stepped in and prevented it from becoming just that.

The blonde hunter didn't bother to put her crossbow down; the arrowhead still pointed at the other blonde female's back as she watched her exit the house alongside Sam. She was quick to follow, keeping her distance just enough to get a better view of the woman's movements in case she began to so much as make a single move towards Sam that wasn't anticipated nor appreciated.

There wasn't much that Anna-Lynne could say to answer the other blonde's question as she had never met her in her life, so instead of shoving herself into the conversation that so clearly needed to take place between said other blonde and Sam, Anna-Lynne hovered on the front porch. Crossbow still aimed and locked on the other woman, just in case she needed to take quick action.

Ben made a slight face, outside was hardly the ideal place to hold a calm and civilized conversation, the heat alone was enough to fray a persons temper, but he sighed and went along with it, only because he knew that look. Anna-Lynn was in full defense and she wasn't going to be swayed. Ben was confident that the other woman wasn't a threat, most dead things offered one of two reactions to silver, either they were burned by it or more subtly, they tarnished it black - the type of creatures that didn't elicit either reaction? Well they weren't likely to be stopped by a crossbow either. It was true, a person could have something to do with demons without being one of them, but it probably still meant she wasn't an immediate threat to anyone.

"Well if that's what it takes for everyone to calm down then I can't argue." He said keeping himself slightly between Jessica and Anna as she and Sam headed out the door, ushering her outside and turning on the porch fans so at least they would have a breeze to help cool them and keep the mosquitoes away during their conversation. The screen door slammed behind Anna as they went out, so likely Dean knew that everyone had made their way outside as well.

Ben hung back by Anna-Lynne and gave her arm a gentle squeeze before leaning casually up against the side of the house one eye to his uncle and the other towards his step-mother. "It'll be fine! If it's any comfort, Bangs will probably head for the kitchen once she realizes I'm not there." Bangalore loved hovering around Alex, his baby sister quickly becoming the pitbulls second favorite person in the house, due to her messy eating habits and the fact that the cats avoided her loud cries and grabbing hands.

Not that he felt there would be any need for the guarding. This really did look like a case of someone just brought back from the dead after a sudden and surprising end with no memory of what had happened, and as a normal person no idea of how much time could have passed. Ben felt sorry for her really, if she had been his uncles girlfriend, Sam had probably moved on and now his dilemma was explaining that to the poor woman.

Was it such a stretch that yet another person close to one of the Winchesters was brought back from the dead? No, in all actuality it wasn’t. Surprisingly enough, it seemed to be the norm, not that death - or the rising from it - was something they’d ever get used to. His own deaths, Dean’s deaths, Anna-Lynne’s…It didn’t matter how many times you died and came back, it took a lot out of you and your loves ones.

Sometimes it even takes your soul…

So why was it particularly hard to believe that the same could happen with Jess, the love of his life, the one whose death was his fault? Why was it easier to automatically assume that the female that stood before him looking devastatingly like the woman he was to be married to was a demon? That she wasn’t real?

What would be more difficult to bear, demon Jessica or real Jessica? Honestly, at this point he didn’t know. If she were a demon, he’d have to kill her, or expect Dean to, or Anna-Lynne or Ben or Josh. To them, it would be just another demon. Even to Dean, who never got to know Jess, she’d be just another face. But Sam would know. He’d have to watch her die again, as if seeing her die in his dreams every night wasn’t enough.

If she were real…Then he’d have to admit what he was, what they did. She’d find out that he was his own brand of monster. She’d know that she had been brutally murdered by a demon because of him. And that was hard to take in for him and it would be even harder for her.

He could tell by her stance as he followed her outside that she was extremely uncomfortable and that she was terrified out of her mind. It made it all the more difficult to keep this up. His natural instinct was to pull her in, to protect her, to know he’d never cause her any harm or pain. But he couldn’t promise that. Even if she was real.

A low curse escaped his lips. ”Because I saw you die. It’s my…Damnit.” He took a deep breath and looked to Anna-Lynne and Ben. Ben believed her to be harmless. Anna-Lynne saw her as a threat. Damnit, where was Dean? ”I don’t know what the hell to do.” His words were more to Anna and Ben than Jess as he ran a hand over his face in complete and utter confusion.

Sam had obviously lost his mind somewhere along the way. How could she be dead? She was standing right there in front of him!

She could tell he was hurting, she could see it in his eyes....but she didn't understand any of this, so how could she help? She looked back at the two on the porch, one with a friendly face, the other with a weapon still aimed at her, then turned back to Sam. None of this made any sense.

"I'm sorry, I'm gonna need a second." She whispered weakly. Her mind was racing a 100 miles a minute. What the hell was going on? Jess was a logical person, smart and well educated, she could sort this out, right? Going through their quick exchange in her head, she could pinpoint a few things easily.

One, Sam was sure she was dead. But that didn't make any sense. Death isn't forgiving. She was breathing, she was alive, she had feelings, she wasn't dead. Two, she still didn't know how much time had passed or who was responsible for this. Three, where was Dean and who were these strangers? Were they related? Sam had never talked much about his family but she could swear up and down that he didn't have a sister..and her last name was Winchester?

She felt like she was going to have a panic attack. As much as she wanted to reach for Sam, her head told her not to and that made her heart hurt. "I'm right here, Sam. I'm ok....for the most part." She was still petrified. She was still confused and hurt and worried that the life she loved had changed too much to ever welcome her back from wherever she had been.

"Like I said, I remember Dean coming to get you, your dad was on a hunting trip and he was worried that something had happened, so you went with him." Her voice was quiet and gentle. She was now very self-aware of anything that could come off as a threat to her audience. She wished she was doing this alone.

"The day you were supposed to come back, I remember baking cookies and then...it kind of all goes fuzzy. I don't know why or how I ended up in some sketchy motel and I don't even know where the hell I am."

Her voice was getting slightly stronger, she hated the way she felt right now and it was her instinct to fight, not cower. This wasn't fair to her. "All I had was a note that told me to find you, and this address was on it. That's it. I don't want to hurt you. I don't know why you'd want to hurt me."

That part was probably the most confusing next to them referencing her death multiple times now. His voice saying he'd kill her was something she wouldn't ever stop replaying in her head. Why would he be so angry with her? What had she done to excuse the blonde behind her to still be aiming for her chest with a crossbow?

THANKS KAY

Anna-Lynne couldn't help but smile to herself as she watched Ben using himself to keep some distance between she and Jessica. He was so much like his father, it was insane... Always willing to put others before himself, and always looking for solutions to seemingly complex problems. There wasn't a single doubt in the blonde's mind that he was going to become an amazing man and would do so many amazing things...

That thought somewhat lingered in her mind as everyone moved outside. It was easier this way; she wouldn't have to worry about this stranger of a woman bringing any harm to her young daughter. It was one large weight off her shoulders, but that didn't mean that this woman wasn't still dangerous or that she wasn't looking to bring harm to Anna-Lynne, Dean or their family.

She offered Ben as reassuring a smile as she could upon feeling him squeezing her arm gently. He surely already knew that she'd never let anything happen to him; both Anna-Lynne and Dean would happily accept death before they ever let someone or something bring harm to Dean's son.

Sam was confused - rightfully so - but Anna-Lynne could only shake her head gently in reply to his words. It was impossible to know what to do in circumstances like this, that was true, but Sam needed to think about the greater good of the family, not just his own greater good. It was a beautiful thought to think that maybe his ex-girlfriend was back from the great beyond, but who would bring her back? Surely anyone that loved her enough to go to those great lengths would have known Sam and would have run it by him...

"Listen, lady... We could stand here and listen to everything you have to say, but that's not going to change the fact that we have no idea who - or what - you are, let alone why you're here. Sam and Dean had a house in Italy and only moved here in the last few years... How would you have gotten this address?"

Surely there weren't too many people outside those that actually lived in this house that knew who it belonged to; Dean and Sam didn't exactly have the largest group of friends...

"It just doesn't add up. Anyone that you and Sam knew would have found a way to give him a heads up. They would have done more than just leave some random note or another for you with an address no one should even have. As far as I'm concerned, you should just leave..."

Ben really wished he didn't feel obligated to stay, wished his dad could come out and do what he was fumbling to pull off. Dean would be able to get Anna to lower her weapons, would know just what to say to kick Sam out of his emotional paralysis and get him thinking again, he would recognize Jessica, would maybe know how she acted. There was that instinct born out of long experience. Benjamin clever as he was for a teenaged boy just didn't have that kind of instinct. Sure he was smart enough, he could run every test any of his uncles could. He knew how finesse them in a way all his own,and he had a social instinct that Sam and Dean sometimes struggled with, but this was a situation where a good strong instinct and a voice of experience would have really helped.
"Well that sucks, Uncle Sam. Because you're the only one here who can decide what to do."
The teenager was pretty sure he had shown the poor bewildered woman wasn't an immediate threat, even if he and Anna weren't there to back Sam up.

"I mean, she's right, obviously whoever pulled this off wasn't doing you any favors. But I don't think they were doing her any favors either." After all Jessica had been dead since... Hell, Bush had been President the last time she had been alive right? Now here she was in the future. No memory. Had she been a good person? She seemed from what little he could tell, like a kind person, very sweet in her bewilderment. She could have been angry. But instead she was afraid, and hurt. If she had been in the good place, then dragging her back down here wasn't for her benefit either. The only things she had in this world now was Sam. "But that doesn't mean she's dangerous in herself."

Good people did terrible things with the best of intentions. Angels could nuke whole cities, use torture, and coercion to get their way. The King of Hell could throw everything he had on the line just to stop the Apocalypse. So maybe someone meant to hurt Sam, but Jessica was innocent. Caught in the crossfire yet again. Yanked out of her Heaven, memory scrubbed and thrown down into the Big Easy with nothing but Sam's name, and the Winchesters address.

"I... I don't feel like running her off is the right thing to do, Anna. I think she's a victim here too, maybe more than anyone else. But it's Sam's call... were you at a hotel?" He asked her his tone kind, and the puppy eyes in full effect. Still hoping his visible concern for her might soften Anna's stance. "I could give her a ride back to town and maybe we could use one of the spare cards to set her up someplace till you guys can figure this out?" Not like there weren't enough fraudulent credit cards floating around here, it would be no skin off their backs to offer her such a small thing.

YOU'RE NOT IN THIS MOVIE
YOU'RE NOT IN THIS SONG
Normally, Dean wasn’t the type to show up late to parties. Hell, he was usually the host: bring on the fire and flame, and damned be you if you thought you were getting away clean. But ever since Ali was born, he and Anna had sort of adopted a policy (read: he had asked and maybe even cajoled his wife a little to help him come up with a plan) that if they sensed danger (Will Robinson!), they’d get their infant daughter spirited away to safety before joining the fray.

Now, hypothetically, and not too little presumptuously, Dean had assumed this task would normally fall to Anna, if only because she was less trained as a hunter than he was. However, the best laid plans of mice and men (and the only line he remembered from that book… or was it a movie?) didn’t anticipate that maybe Dean might actually end up being in a better position to ensure Ali was passed off to their designated ad hoc-babyguard rather than Anna. But since Dean had been playing “airplane, meet mouth” with his daughter when Jessica showed up, and Anna had not been, it was Dean that dialed his brother-in-law, and handed off Ali when the wolfish cop showed up at their back door. Vincent would take his niece off to stay at his heavily-defended place (the guy did MMA for shits and giggles, for crying out loud) until Dean or Anna called with the safe word. That way, neither mother nor father had to fret about Ali while they took care of business.

Still, by the time all was sorted, the conversation carrying on in the front room had moved to the porch. Dean was fine with this. It meant they didn’t see where exactly he pulled the pistol from, nor would they notice him creeping towards the front door from the shadowed part of the room. Anna’s blonde head was the first one he accounted for, then Sam’s—who could miss that boulder? Ben, and…

He had to accept that in order to figure out what the hell was going on that he’d have to reveal himself. That sucked dick. But given the orientation of everyone on the porch to the open front door, he couldn’t very well try to toss holy water or salt at the one person who shouldn’t be there. Sam had said he saw her die. That didn’t mean much in their world, but Jessica had kinda been dead for so long that he couldn’t really fathom how or what could bring her back without some nefarious purpose supporting it. What with the house defended to the high hills with hex bags, iron, and salt-infused paint anyway, it was unlikely that Jess was anything creepy or crawly or in between… but, well, Dad always said. Never assume.

Dean stepped out past the threshold, gun held high and pointed at Jessica’s sternum. “I’m going to have to ask you to state your business, because things just got real freaky-deaky here, and I don’t like it.

He had overheard earlier Ben trying to diffuse the situation, and while he appreciated what his son was trying to do, Dean knew Ben didn’t have a whole lot of experience with the true fuckery that the world could provide a la carte to the Winchesters. This wouldn’t be the first time someone reappeared unbidden out of their past instead of staying in their grave like a good little corpse. Granted, Jessica could be a victim in this situation—hell, that was the most likely answer—but it didn’t still didn’t account for the fact there simply wasn’t some random fairy-necromancer out there raising the longed-for dead out of the good of his cold, dead, boney-assed heart. People come back from beyond their dirt nap, there was a reason.

Sam didn't know what hurt more, his head or his heart. It was one thing to have your brother rise from the dead when you were the one pulling him from Hell. It was one thing coming out of Hell yourself. But to see the woman you once loved, that will always love, that you saw burn on your own ceiling, come back...It was painful. The memories, the heartbreak and devastation, all of it, rushed back to him and in a wave.

Who would do this? He tried to pick his brain. Who did he know that would or could bring her back or at least know enough about her to imitate her if she was indeed...not her? He knew there were plenty who had the motivation but the reason? The ability? It didn't make sense.

He cringed as she whispered, needing a minute, stepping forward as if he was going to...what? Take her hand? Put his arms around her? That was his instinct, naturally. But he had to be careful. He couldn't believe her just yet. Could he at all? He knew he was acting like an angsty teenager. There was nothing to do about that just now.

She kept talking, and his heart kept sinking lower and lower. It was his fault that she had died, gone through that. He had left her. He had abandoned her to her fate, and he should have known better. He should have known that his past would catch up with him at some point, because there was no way he had truly escaped all that. He had lived with the guilt of that ever since, and seeing her back...Whether it was her or not...The struggle was very obvious on his face. He used to pride himself on his ability to maintain self control and keep things calml but lately...

"Jess..." He didn't know what he would have said before he stopped himself. He sighed as he gave Ben a look that indicated he wasn't being very helpful with the comment. What was Sam supposed to do? He couldn't put his entire family at risk by believing this was his Jess without fully knowing, because if it wasn't he could be the end of them all. But if it was and they turned her away...

Just the thought of that...But he had his daughters to think about. Dean and Anna and Ben and Ali. Josh. He was thankful when Dean showed up. He knew that he had to take care of Ali, there was a plan for that, but he was glad that he was here.

Anna was right, of course she was, but his brain and his heart couldn't agree with each other at all. He turned to his brother, his words a quiet whisper. "Should I take her somewhere else, figure this out..." He knew Ben offered, but he wouldn't put his nephew at that risk. That risk should be on himself, considering she was there for him, real or not.

You are all that I've got.I want the markings made on my skin to mean something to me again. Hope you haven't left without me. &
